The Baie-des-Sables wind farm entered operation in November 2006. With a capacity of 109.5 MW, it was the first wind farm developed by Cartier Wind Energy.
Built entirely on private land, the 73-wind turbine farm was a success in terms of its construction, schedule compliance, integration and respect for communities.
It is located on land in the Baie-des-Sables and Métis-sur-Mer municipalities.
Over the 20 years of Baie-des-Sables wind farm operations, Cartier Wind Energy will pay the municipalities of Baie-des-Sables and Métis-sur-Mer $2,900,000. These voluntary contributions are based on the installed capacity of each municipality. Cartier will pay $1000 per megawatt (MW) installed at the time of the wind farm’s construction, and will continue to pay the same amount annually over the 20 years of the wind farm’s operation.
These funds may be expended on areas within the municipalities’ jurisdiction. Furthermore, Cartier will provide a visibility fund of $30,000 for the municipalities to assist local non-profit organizations.
