The Gros-Morne will farm will have an installed capacity of 211.5 MW. It will be built in two phases. The first phase, involving 100.5 MW and 67 wind turbines, is scheduled for completion on December 1, 2011. Phase II will require the installation of 74 wind turbines, and will be finalized on December 1, 2012.
This major project will require three years of construction. In order to begin construction of Phase I in the spring of 2010, deforestation work was performed in the fall of 2009.
Over the 20 years of the Gros-Morne wind farm’s operations, Cartier Wind Energy will pay the municipalities of Saint-Maxime-du-Mont-Louis and Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Rivière-Madeleine over $5,600,000. These voluntary contributions will be based on the capacity installed in municipal property. Cartier will pay $1000 per megawatt (MW) installed at the time of the wind farm’s construction, and will continue to pay the same amount annually over the 20 years of the wind wind’s operation. These funds may be expended on areas within the municipalities’ jurisdiction.
Furthermore, Cartier will provide a visibility fund of $58,162 annually to assist local non-profit organizations.
